About department

The Department of Mathematics and Mathematical Modeling was founded in 2002, its founder and first head was Doctor of Sciences in Physics and Mathematics. Doctor of Medicine, Professor Garnik Karapetyan. From the moment of its creation until May 2018, the department functioned under the leadership of Doctor of Sciences in Physics and Mathematics, Professor Garnik Karapetyan. Since May 2018 untill June 2023, the department was headed by Candidate of Sciences in Physics and Mathematics Arman Darbinyan. Since June 2023 untill now the department has been headed by Candidate of Sciences in Physics and Mathematics, Associate Professor Gayane Tonoyan.

Qualitative staff of the department:
The department consists of 26 employees, of which 9 are main and 17 are external part-timers.

Activities of the Department:
The main task of the department is to introduce educational activities in all disciplines of theoretical mathematics throughout the university, giving students the opportunity to develop thinking, gain fundamental knowledge in mathematics and use it to solve theoretical and practical problems related to various fields, such as: physics, astronomy, economics, robotics, artificial intelligence, etc.

Educational process of the department:
The department is part of the Institute of Mathematics and Informatics (IMI), and conducts a theoretical course in mathematics in almost all institutes of the university.
At IMI, the department conducts general courses:

  • Mathematical Analysis;
  • Complex Analysis;
  • Differential Equations;
  • Equations of Mathematical Physics;
  • Numerical Methods;
  • Financial Mathematics;
  • Optimization Methods.

In other institutes, the department conducts the following courses:
  • Mathematics;
  • Mathematical Method of Data Processing;
  • Economic and Mathematical Methods and Models;
  • Mathematical Analysis;
  • Differential equations;
  • Equations of Mathematical Physics.

The department conducts special courses in three areas: differential equations, numerical methods, mathematical modeling.
International educational relations, joint educational programs.
The Department of MMM maintains close ties with the Institute of Mathematics of the Russian Federation named after V.A. Steklov, Moscow State University, the Institute of Mathematics named after G. Ramzadze, the Institute of Mathematics named after S.L. Sobolev, the University of Cardiff (England), the University of Padua (Italy), the University of Sofia (Bulgaria), etc. The MMM Chair maintains close ties with various IT companies and not only in Armenia, and joint research work is also carried out.  
 
Research activities of the department:
The department conducts scientific activities in three areas: 
a) Differential Equations and Mathematical Physics 
b) Optimization methods. Numerical Methods and Mathematical Modeling 
в) Artificial Intelligence, Big Data and Robotics 
 

Programs

The Department of MMM together with the Departments of SP and MC in the bachelor's degree are implementing a joint educational program in the direction of training "Applied Mathematics and Informatics".
The department has a master's degree in 2 specialties:
a) 061101007 – " Numerical Analysis and Mathematical Modeling"
b) 01.04.02 – " Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning"
Postgraduate studies in the following specialties:
The department has postgraduate studies in 2 specialties:
 Ա.01.02 - "Differential Equations, Mathematical Physics" of the Republic of Armenia;
05.13.18 - "Mathematical modeling and numerical methods and software complexes" of the Russian Federation.
Doctoral studies in the specialty:
The department has doctoral studies in the specialty Ա.01.02. - "Differential equations" of the RA.
